JOB #2 - THINKING QUESTION
What do you think the main reason Fahrquhar fell for the soldier's trap was? He had it all: A seemingly big house, a very nice social status as a gentleman, a wife and family, slaves, probably a luxurious garden. So why would he risk it all to go set a bridge on fire when the consequence for interfering was death? Also, even though Fahrquhar was the bad guy and was on the south side in the civil war, did this story cause you to feel any compassion for him?
Maybe Fahrquhar was after prestige, like we mentioned in earlier posts. Plantation owners usually don't have much fame, perhaps he wanted to be seen as a hero.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I think he definitely wanted the glory and fame. He is not enlisted, so I think this might be his own way of doing his part in the war, no matter how foolish it is.
DeleteHe really thought he was doing the right thing, but he never thought about what the outcome would be.
DeleteTo answer the last part of your question, this story did make me feel empathy for him, and it really makes you see how just one person can word something in a certain way to twist it just enough so people feel sorry for that person.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lauren, Payton was just looking for attention and praised he really wanted to be recognized. Also I feel bad for him because he let the scout talk him into doing something that he thought would benefit him but really it cost him his life.
